Information about Hurricane Sandy and how you can help.

Update April 22, 2012.

175 days has passed since Hurricane Sandy hit our area.  Now we are getting the bad news from our Insurance companies, Banks, etc.  We had Hurricane Insurance with Travelers. (see Policy) The Claim was denied due to the Weather Service indicating that this wasn't a true Hurricane.

Did you know the Insurance companies have the freedom to craft their own policy coverage language after a disaster has occurred. This allows the companies to change the policy coverage to their advantage.  They don't use standard policy language.  It will be interesting to see how these types of lawsuits are interpreted in the courts going forward.  We will be filing a lawsuit soon.  People we know that lost everything, plus myself, are in disbelief that they had no coverage under their homeowners insurance.

Only 14% of homeowners nationwide had flood Insurance. This is total bull$hit.  We need to write to our local Politicians to make these companies pay these types of claims. See the Letter.  We only want to rebuild. Their excuse is that this was a storm surge created by a super storm. Denial Letter.  You cannot have a storm surge without a hurricane. That's 2nd grade science.

If you don't have savings to pay for repairs your are out of luck. All of my family and friends are using up all of their savings just to make their residence's livable. My house was featured on NOVA Super Storm Sandy showing the damage created by Hurricane Sandy.  We will rebuild, we are currently trying to put the house back on it's foundation.

Now these Politicians are using this disaster to line their own pockets, with the 51 billion aid package they voted for, to help us rebuild.  We will only see bridges built to nowhere again, with this money. Plus another bailout for our Government. The Insurance companies have our Government in their back pockets, with special interest political donations and closed door deals.

We need legal action A.S.A.P.  Class action suits. Please write to your local Congress and Senate Representatives to make these Insurance Companies pay these Hurricane claims.  We had the same policy for over 50 years, and never missed a payment, and thought we were covered for Hurricane damage with Hurricane Insurance labeled in the policy.  Please let me know if you can help.  If you know of any firms doing Pro Bono work let me know.

Relief Package news

I am going through the 51 billion aid package line by line on the 101 page document. I found this bill will not help anyone affected by the storm.  They mentioned Hurricane Sandy over 80 times.  If the Government is classifying this as a Hurricane, the Insurance companies should classify this as a Hurricane as well and pay their claims if you have Hurricane Insurance.  Here are items listed for aid and I'm only up to page 37 of 101.  This is only 17 out of the 51 billion dollars we will borrow from China.  Come back for my final analyst of this awful  package.

If N.O.A.A. needs almost half a billion dollars (page 33 to 35) for repair and equipment, how on God's earth, could we use their measurements to determine that this wasn't an actual hurricane.  Glad "Head Start" is getting money. (sic)  Oil Spill Research.  This has a Farm bill included too.  More to come.

Here is a letter that I received when I gave to the B.C.V.F.D. in August 2012 to support their efforts. The Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department lost all of their equipment responding to all the emergency during hurricane Sandy.  All donations are tax deductible.

Good news: .

The members of the Bethel Park Volunteer Fire Company are proud to be assisting in the recovery efforts for Hurricane Sandy by donating a 1988 Pierce Fire Engine to the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department in Queens New York. The Broad Channel Fire Department lost several of their trucks, and a large amount of equipment in the hurricane. The truck was prepared and shipped out of Bethel Park on Monday November 19th. The cost of shipping the truck to New York is being covered by the Terry Farrell Firefighters fund, which is named after New York City firefighter Terry Farrell who died on 9/11. If you wish to make a donation contributing to the shipping cost please go to www.terryfund.org.

LEGAL NEWS:

The New York legal aid and pro bono community has already begun to provide direct services to those most affected, including filing for FEMA and Disaster Unemployment Insurance benefits, answering immigration status questions, documenting and filing insurance claims, and many other immediate legal needs of individuals and small businesses. We also know from experience with past disasters that these legal needs are just starting; they will evolve and become more complex in the months ahead. As the community creates and coordinates longer-term plans to ensure that people who need legal services can access them in their communities, here are some ways you can stay involved and prepare yourselves to help out. Please join the NYC Pro Bono Center (http://www.probono.net/ny/nyc/jointhisarea/) to keep apprised of pro bono efforts as we move forward.
