Gentlemen,
Thank
you for taking time out of your schedule to attend today's meeting.
I feel it was productive and outlined the goals for our District for
the 2005 year. Your input was greatly appreciated. Please pass on to
those who were not in attendance some of the ideas we discussed,
especially those to build membership, establish new Squadrons,
increase activity, and obtain grant funding through your local
legislators for projects not covered by normal operating expenses.
If you haven't yet submitted your OCF, please do so immediately ( County
Officers, pass this along to your Squadron Commanders and
Adjutants), and let's keep those activity reports flowing.
Also,
remember to mark your calendars and spread the word for the upcoming
10th District Meetings:
Spring
Meeting: Sunday, April 24, 2005 @
1:00 p.m. @ East Hampton Post
District Convention: Sunday, June 12, 2005 @
1:00 p.m. @ Elmont
Post
Regarding the fund-raiser we discussed, I will put something
together and present it at the next meeting for approval. If it ends
up being a raffle, the drawing date will be the District Convention
on 6/12/05. Contact me if you have any other suggestions for a
fund-raiser. Remember, this is for the District, so it can span
Queens, Nassau,
and Suffolk Counties.
I look
forward to working with all of you this year. If I may be of
assistance to you, your officers, or your membership, please do not
hesitate to contact me by email
(SONS1033@aol.com)
or by phone at 516-354-3588.

10th District Report
Roy J. Mezzapelle,
Commander
The 10th District Sons of the American Legion has set its sights on
increasing membership, establishing new Squadrons, getting Squadrons
more involved in community-based activities, and directing some of
our efforts to educate the younger members of our organization in
patriotism and Americanism.
The 10th
District has added the position of Finance Officer to it’s slate of
officers this year due to the implementation of a fifty-cent per
capita dues. Monies will be collected and turned over to the 10th
District American Legion Treasurer, who will deposit it and carry a
ledger entry noting our current balance.
At our September District meeting, it was announced that over the
summer, Oceanside Squadron was established and is now active and
engaged in a membership drive. It was also announced that Floral
Park and Manhasset, in Nassau County, as well as Patchogue in
Suffolk County are interested in establishing
Squadrons. Floral Park’s organizational meeting will take place this
month (October). The Commander of the Nassau County American Legion
is “pitching” the formation of Squadrons at his Post visitations. As
there are approximately 140 American Legion Posts in the 10th
District (over 21,000 members), yet less than 30 Squadrons, there is
much that can be done to build Squadrons and Membership within the
District.
Members from Queens Squadrons have expressed the need for the
organization, but finding members willing to be Officers is an
issue. In discussing this with the members of the Queens Squadrons,
it was agreed that establishing new Squadrons would take priority
over establishing the County Organization.
Legislative Grants was a topic of conversation at our September
District meeting. Noting that the Elmont Squadron was awarded a
$1,000.00 grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs, through
their local Assemblyman. Those in attendance, were encouraged to
contact their local legislators – Town, County, State, Federal – to
request funding for various programs conducted by their Squadrons.
Elmont’s grant was to conduct an Americanism program for its younger
members
.
The $1,000.00 was used for purchasing materials and covering related
expenses to instruct the members in two established programs in the
Sons of the American Legion, the 10-Ideals – Patriotism, Health,
Training, Knowledge, Honor, Faith, Helpfulness, Courtesy, Reverence,
Comradeship, and the Five Point Program of Service – Patriotism,
Citizenship, Discipline, Leadership, Legionism. The program will
commence this Fall.
All 10th
District Squadrons have been encouraged to get involved in
community-based programs such as, parades and visits to schools, as
well as continuing to be involved in visits to Veterans’
hospitals/homes. Squadrons are also encouraged to not forget their
younger members when planning events and programs, as building
events and programs around these members usually results in an
overwhelming success, thus promoting the organization and building
membership for the Legion, Sons, and Auxiliary.
On his own initiative, Robert O’Hare, from Broad Channel Squadron
1404, created a webpage for the 10th District Sons of the American
Legion, residing on the Broad Channel Post website.
The web address is:
http://www.americanlegionpost1404.com
This page will be used to keep members informed of upcoming
meetings, events, membership goal target dates, etc.
It was my honor and privilege to accompany the New York State
Department Commander and Detachment Commander on their visitation to
Queens County in September. The visitation took place at the Broad
Channel Post, where the Department Commander installed the Queens
County American Legion Officers.
The 10th
District recently recognized immediate Past 10th
District Commander Robert Ganga for his leadership in the 2003-2004
year, and it was an honor for me to present him with his Past
Commander’s pin for a job well done. |
