The History of Memorial Day

In 1966, the federal government, under the direction of President Lyndon Johnson, declared Waterloo, N.Y., the official birthplace of Memorial Day. They chose Waterloo—which had first celebrated the day on May 5, 1866—because the town had made Memorial Day an annual, community-wide event during which businesses closed and residents decorated the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags.

By the late 1800s, many communities across the country had begun to celebrate Memorial Day and, after World War I, observances also began to honor those who had died in all of America's wars. In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be celebrated the last Monday in May. (Veterans Day, a day set aside to honor all veterans, living and dead, is celebrated each year on November 11.)

Today, Memorial Day is celebrated at Arlington National Cemetery with a ceremony in which a small American flag is placed on each grave. Also, it is customary for the president or vice-president to give a speech honoring the contributions of the dead and lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. About 5,000 people attend the ceremony annually.

WASHINGTON -- Jan 20, 2007 - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton launched a long-anticipated 2008 presidential campaign Saturday that could make her the first female president in the nation's history. This picture is from her website under Senior's & Social Security.  I found it funny that our Auxiliary picture got this title.  Carol and Janet maybe, but Mary? and Ellen?.  I would sue.  Why not a picture of her new boyfriend Danny O'Sullivan Sr?  Or Sal, he's about 100 years old?

I found this picture of my grandfather Vincent O'Hare which was drawn by Earl or Edward Laszlo in 1951.  This was done from a hospital bed after he was shot in the Korean War for which he received a Purple Heart. Here's another picture of him in bootcamp.Vincent O'Hare Bootcamp

The Korean War, occurring between June 25, 1950 and a ceasefire on July 27, 1953, was a civil war between the states of North Korea and South Korea that were created out of the post-World War II Soviet and American occupation zones in Korea, with large-scale participation by other countries.

Volunteers lay wreaths at Arlington and over 200 other locations across the Nation

[December 14th, 2006 - All across the Nation volunteers participated in Wreaths Across America at State and National cemeteries, and other prominant Veterans Memorials. THANK YOU to all who helped make it such an amazing day. We are working to share the many stories, photos and videos from ALL the locations, as well as begining the planning for 2007!]

Let's say thanks is a projected started from Xerox in Rochester NY that send personal postcards to our troops oversea's.  This is an excellent project that should be encouraged throughout our Legion posts. www.letssaythanks.com

Here is an letter from a serviceman:

As I was leaving an un-eventful Valentine's Day today, one of the mail clerks yelled "Adams!! You have a package!!" A package, I thought to myself. I'm not expecting anything. What could this be? I took the box into my office and closed the door. As I opened the box, a flood of joy came over me as I looked over the cards from you and the young ones, one of my co-workers walked in to see tears rolling down my eyes. I had never received a gift with this much love, packed into one little place from someone that I've never known.

Xerox is committed to helping people across the nation express their gratitude to our troops overseas. The launch of this program is aimed at reminding them how much Americans appreciate their service.

WASHINGTON -- Veterans in the New York City area will enjoy improved health care with a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) commitment to retain existing medical centers in both Manhattan and Brooklyn while modernizing facilities at St. Albans in Queens, the Honorable R. Post 1404 Needs Your Help To Give Back
Raising Money For Devastated Ohio Post

The money that’s raised will go to the Marines’ families and towards giving them recognition in this veterans memorial in Ohio.

In the dark days after September 11, 2001, the members of an American Legion Post in Ohio undertook a fundraising effort for Ray York Jr., a victim in the attack on the World Trade Center and a member of the Sons of the American Legion Post 1404 in Broad Channel.

The Ohioans from Post 610 raised about $8,000 for York’s family by hosting spaghetti dinners in the Cleveland suburb of Brook Park. Now, after that same post suffered devastating losses fighting in Iraq – 21 members were killed during just one week in August – Post 1404 wants to give back, and they need your support. The men were members of the Marine 3 rd Battalion 25 th Regiment Ohio National Guard, which was first activated in 1943.

“Our intent is to go there on the second Tuesday in March and present a check with donations from the area for the Marines [who were killed] and their families,” 1404’s commander, Bob Connolly told The Wave this week.

“It’s 21 families you’re talking about, and this is a little post in Ohio,” said 1404 member Pat Brosnahan. “If it happened here it would be a shock.”

The Broad Channel post has raised about $6,000 with a “Night at the Races” fundraiser in November and with additional help from the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department, but Connolly wants to well exceed the Ohio post’s generous donation to the York family.

“They reached out to help us and they helped Ray York’s family a tremendous amount,” Connolly explained. “Now it’s our turn.”

All of the money raised by Post 1404 will go to Post 610, which will use about half of the money to honor the fallen Marines in a veterans memorial in Brook Park, Ohio. The rest of the money collected will be given to the families, Connolly said.

Checks made payable to “American Legion Post 1404” may be sent to the post’s headquarters at 209 Cross Bay Boulevard, Broad Channel, New York 11693. Write “Ohio Post 610” in the memo area.

"A man who is good enough to shed his blood for his country is good enough to be given a square deal afterwards. More than that no man is entitled, and less than that no man shall have."

Theodore Roosevelt, 1903

I enjoyed marching side-by-side with my son Rocco at the recent Memorial Day Parade. The parade in Broad Channel was also organized very well. The neighborhood people showed much respect and it was a pleasure to be marching with my fellow Post 1404 members. Nick

Wall Street Trader who re-enlisted as a Marine after 911 cleared of criminal wrong doing. A little background on Lt. Pantano is necessary. He joined the Marine Corps at the age of 17. He is a veteran of the 1991 Gulf War, as well as the peacekeeping operations in Yugoslavia (1992). He left the Marines to attend New York University. After graduation, he went to work as a trader for Goldman Sachs. By 2000, Pantano was living in Manhattan and running his own company. In his spare time, he helped deliver food to some of New York's many homeless shelters.

Army Guard increases re-enlistment bonuses As of Dec. 14 bonuses jumped from $5,000 to $15,000, for current service members who re-enlist for six years. For those who are currently serving abroad, that money will be tax-free. For new recruits, the signing bonus will grow from $6,000 to $10,000.

Only 60 Years ago and we already forgot. No newspapers articles, No media stories, No honorable services, nor parades to honor this event. If it wasn't for these brave men and woman, we might all be speaking German today. Please don't let that happen.

Our new motto "We shall never Forget" for 9/11 may not hold water.

December 16 2004 marks the 60th Anniversary of the "Battle of the Bulge" see some facts here or a picture of my Grandfather Vincent O'Hare in a Long Island Article. He was one of the lucky ones in the Battle, only getting shot in the wallet. Then he re-enlisting for Korea, were he got shot 2 more times.

The Battle of the Bulge lasted from December 16, 1944 to January 25, 1945 which was the largest land battle of World War II in that the United States participated. More than a million men fought in this battle including some 600,000 Germans, 500,000 Americans, and 55,000 British.

The German military force consisted of two Armies with ten corps (equal to 29 divisions). While the American military force consisted of a total of three armies with six corps (equal to 31 divisions). At the conclusion of the battle the casualties were as follows: 81,000 U.S. with 19,000 killed, 1400 British with 200 killed, and 100,000 Germans killed, wounded or captured.

For all you spineless coward bastards that are anti-war activist, get a life. You do more harm then good. You only want what's good for you, not what's good for our Country.

If you don't like how we defend our Country, no one is stopping you from leaving.

"SEE OUR NEW" VETERANS DAY PAGE

I watched today's Veterans Day Parade from the start until the end. I was at the corner of 34th Street and 5th Ave in Manhattan and the crowds were sparse at 11:00 AM. But after the parade started , the crowds grew larger and everyone was very vocal- cheering and waving flags and yelling shouts of  "thank you" out to the marching veterans.

Unless I missed something, the only American Legion group that I saw marching up Fifth Ave. today was the Queens County American Legion!

The men, few in number, but marching proudly behind the Queens County American Legion banner. The color guard standing straight and marching in perfect formation!  Commander Paterson and the men of the American Legion were getting lots of cheers and applause from the crowd as they passed by. A fine day for the Queens County American Legion. You all deserve it!

Americanism Report

by Legislative Chairman John N. Severa 10th District New York

Dear Fellow Americans:

This page contains the status of HJR 10, the Flag Amendment introduced, once again, by Congressmen Cunningham (R-CA) & Murtha (D-PA), in the 109th Congress.

You will note that HJR 10 NOW HAS 66 CO-SPONSORS AT THIS TIME.

From our Tenth District, at present, still only Congresswoman McCarthy (Nassau) and Congressman Crowley (Queens) have signed on. We still have 9 other MC's to get on board.

Let's all get the word out to the membership, their families friends and neighbors to contact their respective MC's and respectfully demand their support for HJR 10. I have also included the C.F.A.'s file on HJR 10. Would everyone please review the C.F.A., as well as the official Congressional file on this issue, and PLEASE TAKE ACTION!

I will keep you briefed on this as well as all other Federal & State Legislation that our respective Legislative Committees forward me.

As always I thank you for the excellent work that you are doing for our Legislative Agenda, and I thank you for your e-mails to Senator Craig and Congressman Buyer on the inadequate VA Budget for FY 2006, to support our National Organization's Testimony before Congress earlier this week.

REMEMBER, GRASSROOTS ARE A MUST IN THE 109TH CONGRESS AS WELL AS ALBANY! God Bless & Be Well.

For God & Country,
John N. Severa
Legislative Chairman
Tenth District, NY

We are a nation at war. Hundreds of thousands of America's finest are fighting on battlefields in far away lands. The flag that unites us leads them. The flag that covers the coffins of our fallen heroes honors them. The flag that honors them deserves a special measure of protection. The November elections were much ado about values. If Congress, like the people, has concern for our values as a nation, support for the symbol that unites us would be an unmistakable sign that they share that concern. Imagine for a second what our forefathers of this great County must be thing now about this issue. They couldn't.

AMERICANS looking for a way to support their troops in Iraq and Afghanistan this holiday season might want to consider the USO's Operation Phone Home, a program to give pre-paid phone cards to those serving in forward-deployed locations.

The program, started in March of 2003, has distributed more than 80,000 phone cards so far. The USO plans to distribute many more over the holiday season to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and to those recuperating from injuries in the U.S. and abroad. According to the USO, the phone cards are by far the most popular item requested by deployed troops.

Donations can be made online at https://www.uso.org or over the phone by calling 1-800-876-7469.

Or, send a check, made out to the USO and with "O.P.H." written on the memo line, to:
